How to Find the Right Keyword For Your Site

Getting the attention of major search engines is the key factor to the success of your website. This is the only way you can gain new visitors can find your site, amidst all the vast number of other websites who may be offering the same product or services. In order to get good visibility on the major search engines, however, you need to launch a successful keyword campaign, starting with two basic tasks:

1. Selecting the Right Keywords

It takes some brainstorming to identify the keywords or keyword phrases that your potential visitors will be using when they search for information contained in your site. Try to think like your online visitor, and use keywords related to your site that will most likely come up when they are using the search engines.

Ideally, each of your webpage should use the appropriate keywords about 3 to 5 times. Do not make the mistake of overstuffing your articles with keywords, as the major search engines would usually consider this as spamming, and would immediately skip your site when they are doing their rankings. Search engine crawlers can find your site easier if you have the keywords positioned on the top left and then down. This means putting the keywords on the first sentences of the article, 2 or 3 times in the body, and again towards the end of the article.

If your website is already alive, you may have to do some tweaking with your content in order to optimize your keywords. If this is too much of a task for you, you can always hire an experienced SEO company who can advise you on how to make changes on your content in order to get your site keyword optimized.

2. Check your competition.

When choosing your keywords, you should also check how popular it is, and how many websites are already showing in the search engine results for a particular keyword. If the keyword you had chosen has too many sites competing for it already, try to narrow down your keywords and make it more specific (add a location, for example – web hosting companies in Seattle). You can also use a question, as most people doing searches online would ask a question. Often, when people use search engines, they also type in at 3 word phrases, for example – cheap website hosting. So try to think of phrases when you are identifying your keywords.

You can also do an online search on the keyword that you want to use, and check the top sites that come up in the results. Visit the site and check its HTML source by clicking on right clicking on your browser and going to “view source” or “view page source”. You can then check the site’s meta tags and look for the keywords that are being used on the site. Remember to choose only keywords that are relevant to your article or your website.

Keywords are essential, and finding out ways to identify the appropriate keyword to your site is one step towards optimizing your site. You can also opt to hire an experienced SEO company that can design your webpages so that they are highly optimized for the right keywords that can land your website on a high page rank with the major search engines.
